DFirst OBD diagnostic tool with Volkswagen Group SFD security system overview for diagnostics and coding

What Is SFD? Explained Simply

SFD (Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose, or “Vehicle Diagnostic Protection”) is a security feature introduced by the Volkswagen Group (VAG) that restricts access to certain advanced diagnostic and coding functions on newer vehicles.

While basic operations like reading and clearing fault codes usually remain available, more advanced operations such as coding, adaptations, retrofit configurations, or enabling hidden features may be blocked unless the tool is authenticated and granted online authorization through the manufacturer’s servers.

What Does SFD Do

The purpose of SFD is to improve vehicle security, prevent unauthorized modifications, and reduce the risk of incorrect or unsafe changes to vehicle systems.

Not all VAG vehicles are protected by SFD. It is mainly found on newer models such as:

Audi A3 (2020+)

SEAT León Mk4 (2020+)

Škoda Octavia Mk4 (2020+)

VW Caddy (2020+)

VW Golf Mk8 (2019+)

SFD may protect functions such as:

Coding  (e.g., enabling hidden features)

Control unit adaptations

Some service features and resets

Retrofit configurations

So even if you plug in a diagnostic tool, you may see a message like:“SFD needs to be unlocked”

About DFirst SFD Assistance

Due to current authorization requirements, SFD-related services are not included in standard subscriptions.

To help users complete necessary operations, each vehicle (VIN) is eligible for one complimentary SFD assistance session for the required module.

After the initial session, you may choose to use any available authorization method applicable to your car or contact DFirst Support for additional assistance.

Availability of SFD-related services may change over time depending on external requirements and supported solutions. While we continuously work to improve the user experience, service availability cannot be guaranteed and may vary by vehicle and function.

Before Requesting Assistance

To make the most of the available session, we recommend:

· Prepare a list of all desired features in advance.

· Perform the desired features one by one.

· If a feature cannot be completed because SFD unlock is required, contact DFirst Support.

How to Request SFD Assistance

Once you have completed the preparations above, please contact DFirst Support and provide your vehicle VIN.

When an SFD session becomes available, simply repeat the operation that previously required SFD unlock.

Important

Please make sure you are already inside the vehicle and connected to the car when contacting support. When an SFD session is available, it remains active for 90 minutes. We recommend completing all required operations during the active session.
